Women's Bureau Funding to be Drastically Reduced! Act Now!

 

ISSUE ALERT The National Association of Commissions for Women (NACW) has a long history of successful collaboration with the Women's Bureau, U.S. Department of Labor.  Indeed, the Women's Bureau Regional Administrators were instrumental in establishing commissions for women in the early 1960s.  President Obama has proposed a 37% reduction in Women's Bureau staffing, downsizing the regional offices from 10 to 6, and an overall 22% funding reduction. NACW strongly opposes these severe reductions and has sent letters to President Obama and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis.  NACW has also provided written testimony for the upcoming hearing by the House Budget Appropriation Committee on Thursday, March 29.  This testimony is available  HERE . Time is of the essence - help protect the budget of the Women's Bureau, DoL and the voice of the ONLY federal office concerned exclusively with serving and promoting the interests of female workers. 2nd Annual Women Building California and the Nation conference (May 19 - 20, 2012)

The conference is designed to bring
more women into the trades and offer
tradeswomen (both new and experienced)
opportunities for networking, skill building,
leadership development and organizing.
Each year, hundreds of tradeswomen
share strategies and build the support and
resources to thrive and advance in skilled
building trades careers.

Rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure
and utilizing green technologies are the
best solutions to addressing the challenges
the construction industry has
faced for several years and growing the
economy. Women must have access to the
high-wage, high-skilled jobs.

Women in Construction Week March 4-10

Press release submitted by Quad Cities Chapter 50 National Association of Women in Construction.

Quad Cities Chapter 50 National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) will celebrate Women in Construction (WIC) Week March 4-10, 2012. NAWIC's mission is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry.

The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry. It is also a time for local chapters to give back to their communities. WIC Week provides an occasion for NAWIC's thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.

Quad Cities Chapter 50 has several functions planned for WIC week. Letters have been sent to area mayors requesting that the city declare March 4-10, Women in Construction Week. The mayors encourage citizens to congratulate the organization on its many accomplishments, including 50 years in the Quad-Cities, as the voice of women in construction.

On March 8, Chapter 50 will honor employers who have given support to NAWIC throughout the past year. A dinner will be held at The Machine Shed, 7250 NW Blvd., Davenport. Active NAWIC members propose their employer for this honor. A wooden appreciation plaque will be presented to first-year honorees and year plates will be presented to previous honorees. This event also gives the employers a chance to learn more about NAWIC and its local projects and committees. Each committee chair will explain the committee's purpose and duties.

Saturday, March 10, 2012, QC Chapter 50 NAWIC will participate in Girl Scouts World Thinking Day and celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouting at the River Center in Davenport, Iowa. The organizers anticipate over 2,000 local girl scouts will attend to learn about scouting across the globe. The girls will visit individual booths having a passport stamped at each booth. At NAWIC's booth the girls will learn how to electrically screw in a screw. They will be outlining the Girl Scout name and logos with the screws and the finished 6 ft. x 2 ft. plaque will be presented to the local Girl Scout Council. Internationally, NAWIC has organizations in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, the UK (seven regions), South Africa, and soon to be in Guam (March, 2012).
