Some state-funded housing projects in the Western Cape have scooped the prestigious Govan Mbeki Awards for delivering exceptional work.

The annual awards for outstanding work in housing development were initiated in 2006 and named after Govan Mbeki in honour of the role he played in human settlements by partnering with key stakeholders in order to further the cause of building a nation free of inequity.

At a ceremony held this week 11 state-funded housing projects received the prestigious award in different categories namely best finance linked individual subsidy programme project, best upgrading informal settlements programme project, best rental stock, best priority project and best enhanced people's housing project.

Additionally, two students, Gerhard Hanekom and Merli Koen, were awarded the Govan Mbeki merit student award and the organisation,

South African Women in Construction walked away with the Govan Mbeki best woman partnership award.

Deputy Minister of Human Settlements Zou Kota-Fredericks, who presented the awards together with human settlements

MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela, said through the efforts of partners the government was able to build sustainable human settlements and create jobs.

Madikizela said the state-funded housing projects that had won awards had showcased hard work.
However, he said the provincial housing backlog was not dented despite delivering houses.

The N2 Gateway housing project, which had built 3012 houses in Delft, scooped the best priority project award. – WCN

NAWIC Announces 2012 Crystal Vision Award Winners

FORT WORTH, Texas, May 16, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is pleased to announce the winners of its 18th annual Crystal Vision Awards. The mission of the Crystal Vision Awards is to recognize individuals who promote, expand and encourage the role of women in the construction industry. Jenny Hubbard, of Oakland, Calif., is the recipient of the Crystal Vision Award, which is given to a non-member of NAWIC, and Pamela House, of Providence, R.I., is the recipient of the Crystal Achievement Award, which is presented to a NAWIC member.

Jenny Hubbard, one of only a few Industrial Strategic Account Managers for United Rentals Inc., has made numerous contributions to the construction industry and women's roles within it. At United Rentals, Hubbard has made great strides in a male-dominated field. She is one of three Strategic Account Managers for the company and is the only female member of United Rentals' Industrial Leadership Committee.

Pamela House embodies NAWIC's core purpose, "To enhance the success of women in construction." Currently a Senior Accountant, House has worked for Gilbane Building Company for more than 30 years. For more than 20 of those years, House has served on Gilbane's Diversity Council.

House and Hubbard will be honored during the 18th annual Crystal Vision and Awards Gala at NAWIC's 57th Annual Meeting and Educational Conference in Denver, Colo., Aug. 29-Sept. 1, 2012. NAWIC members from across the country will gather at the Sheraton Denver Downtown in Denver for the Conference, which will culminate at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1 with the Awards Gala.

Tradeswoman in the News: Sonya Codero

Sonya Codero joined Piledrivers Local 56 in Boston through a project with hiring goals.  The UMass Boston PLA covers $700 million worth of construction over ten years, and includes workforce hiring goals of 50% Boston residents, 25% people of color and 10% women.

Women in Construction Week March 4-10

Quad Cities Chapter 50 National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) will celebrate Women in Construction (WIC) Week March 4-10, 2012. NAWIC's mission is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry.

The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry. It is also a time for local chapters to give back to their communities. WIC Week provides an occasion for NAWIC's thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.

Quad Cities Chapter 50 has several functions planned for WIC week. Letters have been sent to area mayors requesting that the city declare March 4-10, Women in Construction Week. The mayors encourage citizens to congratulate the organization on its many accomplishments, including 50 years in the Quad-Cities, as the voice of women in construction.

On March 8, Chapter 50 will honor employers who have given support to NAWIC throughout the past year. A dinner will be held at The Machine Shed, 7250 NW Blvd., Davenport. Active NAWIC members propose their employer for this honor. A wooden appreciation plaque will be presented to first-year honorees and year plates will be presented to previous honorees. This event also gives the employers a chance to learn more about NAWIC and its local projects and committees. Each committee chair will explain the committee's purpose and duties.

Saturday, March 10, 2012, QC Chapter 50 NAWIC will participate in Girl Scouts World Thinking Day and celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouting at the River Center in Davenport, Iowa. The organizers anticipate over 2,000 local girl scouts will attend to learn about scouting across the globe. The girls will visit individual booths having a passport stamped at each booth. At NAWIC's booth the girls will learn how to electrically screw in a screw. They will be outlining the Girl Scout name and logos with the screws and the finished 6 ft. x 2 ft. plaque will be presented to the local Girl Scout Council. Internationally, NAWIC has organizations in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, the UK (seven regions), South Africa, and soon to be in Guam (March, 2012).
